Start in the server room

Nextsulting started in 2014. I was out of high school, with a clear picture and not much else. The picture was borrowed from a sentence I still like: make a dent in the universe. The practical version was smaller and better. Help a business become unmistakable online, and do it in a way that respects the people running it.
Before the firm, I was in the IT and web rooms of an apartment company, and in consulting work around real estate. That is not a romantic origin. It is the reason the practice has a spine. I had watched marketing promises land on systems that could not catch a lead, a work order, or a straight answer. The campaign was never the constraint. The constraint was the distance between a promise and the operation.
So the firm was built as a place for judgment and for build. Web, media, search, film, the unglamorous follow-through. In 2023 we acquired a full-service advertising agency, not because a logo wall was missing, but because the work had gotten larger than a single craft. Owners were asking for someone who could see the whole table.
That is still the offer. Not a pile of channels. A principal who has sat in the server room and the strategy room and does not treat them as different religions. When I talk about installing AI systems, I mean it in that lineage. Intelligence is infrastructure. It deserves an owner, a boundary, and a maintenance plan. It does not deserve a launch party.
If you are hiring, hire for that posture. Taste matters. So does the willingness to draw how a Tuesday actually moves. The companies that pull away over a decade are rarely the ones with the cleverest ad. They are the ones whose growth has become a system a team can run.
